SouthernGuide speaks French, German and Spanish and has lived in Brussels, Madrid and all over continental Europe. Come with me on an adventure! From London, it’s best to allow a couple of nights away, but some tours are just possible in a daytrip! Just look at these examples:
A day in northern France
We drive an hour or so through Kent to the Channel Tunnel. After a 35 minute journey in our car on the rail shuttle under the English Channel, we arrive in France. Lunch is at one of the dozen country restaurants around Calais that guarantee a good value menu of local fare. Then we can explore the massive walls of Boulogne or Montreuil, and sample the shops and beach life in stylish Le Touquet. Many people like to extend the tour for a night or two to visit the First World War battlefields, or the Impressionist painter Claude Monet's garden in Normandy, or the fizz-filled cellars of the Champagne region.
Paris
You would want to spend a couple of nights in Paris to enjoy its classic sights – the bateau-mouche trip on the River Seine, the view from the Eiffel Tower, the stroll on the Champs Elysees. Or we leave the car behind, and you let me accompany you on the Eurostar fast train to Paris where I fix for you any combination of taxi tour of the main sights; walking tour of the centre and my favourite hidey-holes; and the free time everyone needs in Paris, whether for window-shopping or romantic foolery…
Bruges and Brussels
Bruges is an hour or so beyond Calais. This amazingly well preserved “Venice of the North” is best enjoyed on a canal boat trip, followed by your pick of its excellent restaurants and cafes. Brussels, “Capital of Europe”, is another hour away and unless we day-trip on the Eurostar, it’s worth overnighting to enjoy its lively lifestyle and architecture such as you find in the World Heritage designated Grand’Place.
Or let’s go further…
...just tell me what your dream destination in Europe is! SouthernGuide will have lots of recommendations and short cuts to let you enjoy your trip more and make best use of your precious time. |
